Amrita Sher-Gil (1913 – 1941) was the first modern women painter of India. She said, “I don’t think I should paint at all in Europe, Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse, Braque, India belongs to me”. Half Hungarian and half Indian, after having studied art in Paris, she travelled extensively to discover India. Enriched by the experience she relocated herself in India, heralding a modernist style with a nationalist intent.
